PREFACE
Volutes d’encens is taken from the third movement of Undō, a piece for viola, electronics and video.
The piece is inspired by the first journey of initiation undertaken by the great Japanese poet Matsuo Bashō. Originally conceived for the Japanese shakuhachi flute, the acoustic version for solo viola that you are about to play instead draws on the sound and character of the South Indian vina.
In retrospect, and following a study trip to India that I undertook with the Kimya Ensemble, where I had the opportunity to work with great masters, I now realize more clearly that I incorporated several elements of traditional Indian music into the piece, which I explain in greater detail below.
Volutes d’encens also incorporates several techniques developed in the works of Garth Knox, a musician, composer and pedagogue who explores the blending of different musical styles and techniques in order to push beyond the instrument’s limitations, while also developing technical ease and a musical openness that can enrich all musical styles.
